Welcome to Greenrock

Greenrock is working to empower individuals and companies to do their part in making Bermuda socially, economically and environmentally more sustainable.

Ahead of the globally observed Earth Hour this Saturday, local sustainability advocacy group Greenrock is calling on residents to join in on the largest global action against climate change.

Earth Hour 2014 will be observed between 8:30 and 9:30pm this weekend, with more than 7,000 cities and 150 countries expected to ‘go dark’ by dousing the lights in their homes and businesses.

“It’s not easy being green,” said Executive Director of Greenrock, Gordon Johnson, quoting Kermit the Frog, of Sesame Street fame.

Speaking at the weekly Hamilton Rotary Club meeting, Mr Johnson said joining in the fight against climate change is an “opportunity to solve together what we can’t do alone.”

“This year, we join over 150 other countries in pausing to reflect on what can be done to save our planet. This is symbolic, of course.

“Pausing for one day and turning your lights off for one hour isn’t going to solve our environmental issues,” said Mr Johnson.

“But it does bring Bermuda together as a community, and joins our community with the rest of the world in saying ‘This is important. This matters’.”

A “full day of activities” has been scheduled by the group, beginning with a ‘Living Green Expo’ which will open after noon this Saturday in the upper level of the Washington Mall.

Greenrock is also inviting members of the public to stroll the unlit streets of Hamilton for ‘The Walk of Flame’.

With an entry fee of $23, which covers costs and registration, participants will be given tea lights and are encouraged to bring decorated jars to protect the flames and illuminate the way.

Mr Johnson ended his presentation with the last lines from Kermit’s ballad about self-acceptance.

“I ‘m green, I’m beautiful, and I think it’s what I want to be.”
