Last January, Hawaii introduced their ban on plastic bags, allowing retailers three years to get rid of their supply and come up with alternatives. Both states have declared themselves the 'first US state to ban plastic bags'. Regardless of who was first, these landmark decisions by Hawaii and California are wins for the 'ban the bag' movement and the planet.

Similar bans exist in hundreds of cities across the USA, but California is the first mainland state to impose the ban.

The legislation allows merchants to charge customers.

Local efforts to get Bermuda Government to look at a bag ban or charge have included a petition with over 500 signatures, and have resulted in some supportive words but no tangible action to date.
