jeremy-deacon[Opinion column written by Jeremy Deacon] This is a real bug bear of mine and I find it difficult to see why it is dragging on for so long.

I know it causes incredible controversy and stirs up emotions in Bermuda but to me [and many others as well] it is a no-brainer.

It is the Blue Halo – an idea stunning in its simplicity that would put Bermuda on the world stage while at the same time enhancing our attraction as a tourist destination.

richard bransonThe Carbon War Room (CWR) recently shared their perspective on natural gas for small island economies, as part of their Operation Smart Island Economies which aims to transition islands to 100% renewable energy by accelerating commercial investment.

“The Carbon War Room fears that the immediate attractiveness of natural gas could lessen the commitments of governments and industries to pursuing energy systems that are truly both low-carbon and secure for the long-term, and that natural gas could divert major funds away from renewable energy projects.” says Hilary McMahon, Director of Research.

tigersharkThe Bermuda Shark Project and OCEARCH's Great White Shark tagging program have recently produced valuable insight and impressive imagery with respect to our ocean's apex predators.

Although both the tiger shark and great white shark are designed for stealthy predation, have a keen sense of smell, and are capable of high speed attack, it is suggested here that these majestic fish are not the most efficient killers in our waters.

KEMH-Acute-Care-WingKing Edward VII Memorial Hospital's new Acute Care wing has a 'secret' weapon in the war against raw sewage – an underground sewage treatment facility that has capacity to treat up to 570 m3 of sewage water per day. This is like 2,000 bathtubs full of water.

This inconspicuous new facility will ensure that none of the hospitals' waste water flows into our South shore waters without being thoroughly treated through four stages.

LNG shipNatural gas is often touted as a “bridge” fuel to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions during a transition from coal-fired power plants to renewable sources of energy. But natural gas offers few short-term benefits over coal, according to a study released last week by Energy Innovation, as long as the natural-gas infrastructure continues to leak methane.
