Upgyres, a Vancouver organization, is one of the latest pilot projects and is looking to use the machine as a tool to clean up the North Pacifc plastic garbage patch.

Upcycle the Gyres Society (UpGyres) plan to collect and upcycle plastic floating on the surface of the sea and the water column beneath into something useful again and make it profitable by using a very special machine that converts plastic waste from the ocean into crude oil at high seas. It feels like the future is finally here. The Blest machine, as it is known, is named after the Japanese company who produces it, and over the course of a few years, this invention has raised eyebrows worldwide.

plastic to oil process 2

How it works: Crushed plastic chips are loaded into a collection container and then melted as they're pushed through two chambers with ceramic heaters. The plastic is then vapourized at 400°C, leaving behind a non-activated carbon char residue. The gas is then cooled in a condenser and liquifies into oil. Any remaining gas is filtered and released as carbon dioxide and steam.
