It is exciting to report that, in just three years, planning and building applications for solar energy have increased 253 percent from 56 applications in 2010 to 142 in 2013.

Even more exciting is that all of these applications have been driven by the property owner.

strawsonbeachIt is the middle of summer: we may have got past Cup Match and Beachfest, but there is a lot of summer to go. Go ahead, kick back and have fun! Global warming? Grant GibbonsThe Department of Energy begins this week seeking advice on establishing a new energy regulatory environment, with a promise of public consultation later this year. The new regulatory regime for energy in Bermuda is a priority for the Ministry of Education and Economic Development.

A new study of Bermuda's offshore wind has concluded that it is a viable source of renewable energy for Bermuda.

The report states "The results from our wind energy model show that offshore wind energy is an economically viable option. Our calculated LCOE of $0.261/kWh is significantly lower than the price of electricity paid by consumers. A demonstration of our spatial analysis model shows that, for our chosen set parameters, it is possible to site a 100 MW wind farm on the Bermuda platform with minimal risk to marine habitat and fisheries."

Green energyBritain is in the midst of a green energy revolution after production soared to record levels, according to new figures which deal a blow to opponents of renewable energy and a potential boost for consumers.

The amount of electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro has soared by 43 per cent in the past year to account for a fifth of production, as newly-built plants came on stream and the weather became windier, the Office for National Statistics has said.

Quinton EdnessSurprisingly, said Mr Edness, there had not been a "whisper" of any desire by Government to reduce the Island's dependence on fossil fuels considering the recent advances in renewable energies. The biggest and best way is to cut energy costs.

"I do not expect Belco to recommend [that], however I did expect the Government department responsible for energy to have made recommendations by now...
