PEOPLES-CLIMATE-MARCHToday [21 Sep 2014] hundreds of thousands turned out for the People's Climate March in New York City and in other cities around the world demanding action to combat climate change.

The marchers would not be sympathetic to Ascendant's $640,688 drop in profits reported earlier this week due, in part, to Belco plant inefficiencies which cause them to burn excessive quantities of fossil fuel.

A fight over fracking is looming in Texas. Another stand-off is shaping up in Colorado. Yet drillers' reactions couldn't be more different.

In Texas, drillers are doing their noisy in-your-face fracking as usual. Meanwhile, on a small farm about an hour from the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the oil industry is giving fracking a makeover, cutting back on rumbling trucks and tamping down on pollution.

Bermuda-feral-catsWe love birds! We really do! That's why we think it's important to keep things in perspective and do the things that will really help them and make a difference. Many people have this obsession with wind turbines killing birds, probably because it's a really great story. As a meme, it really strikes the imagination because wind turbines are this green thing, right, so killing birds is antithetical to what they're supposed to be doing...

Gorhams SolarBusinesses that put solar-generated electricity into the Belco grid are finally to be paid for their power.

Belco CEO Walter Higgins yesterday revealed that the firm's proposal to the Energy Commission to set up a temporary pay back scheme had been approved.

On August 30th, the state of California banned the use of disposable plastic bags after the legislature passed a law prohibiting the use of these in supermarkets, shops and pharmacies.

This represents a significant milestone in the global movement to reduce the volume of single-use bags.

Elliot Grounds CleanupLast month, at the height of our summer season, our 'Greenrock Says' described some "low impact" ways to help the environment – and probably your wallet as well: buying in bulk, increasing recycling, using less gasoline, turning down our AC and thereby reducing electricity. Did it all make sense? Did you give it a try?

Sessions_HouseIn May, Premier Craig Cannonier resigned in the wake of JetGate, which triggered a Cabinet shuffle. The new Premier, Michael Dunkley, replaced Mr Trveor Moniz with One Bermuda Alliance backbencher Jeanne Atherden as the Minister of Health and the Environment, and added Seniors to the Ministry portfolio. This is the third time the Minister responsible for Environment has changed within the last two years.

August update on Eco-Schools from Programme Manager Abbie Caldas.

At the close of the 2013/2014 school year, we have successfully engaged with eight schools to reach step 2 of 7 within the Eco-Schools framework.

In the winter, we participated in various public outreach events: presenting at Pecha Kucha, visiting a school's Earth Hour event, and participating in BZS's Environmental Youth Conference.

The largest solar panel power plant in the world (626GWh) is located in the desert about 160 kilometers southwest of Phoenix. The plant was just completed in April 2014 and that has a lot to do with why it's in the number 1 position. Swanson's Law (really just an observation) tells us that the cost for the panels that make up a PV plant halve roughly every two years - meaning that every two years companies can build plants double the size for the same price.

2014-07-01-solarpowerbarbados-thumb1"Energy independence is not just temporarily producing enough of our own fossil fuels to get by. Real energy independence is freeing ourselves from the addiction to the fossil fuels which are destroying our environment and leaving our economy a hostage to events beyond our borders."

This statement is taken from a recent article in the Huffington Post entitled Why Tiny Barbados Is Beating Us on the Road to Green Energy.
