On August 30th, the state of California banned the use of disposable plastic bags after the legislature passed a law prohibiting the use of these in supermarkets, shops and pharmacies.

This represents a significant milestone in the global movement to reduce the volume of single-use bags.

Sessions_HouseIn May, Premier Craig Cannonier resigned in the wake of JetGate, which triggered a Cabinet shuffle. The new Premier, Michael Dunkley, replaced Mr Trveor Moniz with One Bermuda Alliance backbencher Jeanne Atherden as the Minister of Health and the Environment, and added Seniors to the Ministry portfolio. This is the third time the Minister responsible for Environment has changed within the last two years.

The largest solar panel power plant in the world (626GWh) is located in the desert about 160 kilometers southwest of Phoenix. The plant was just completed in April 2014 and that has a lot to do with why it's in the number 1 position. Swanson's Law (really just an observation) tells us that the cost for the panels that make up a PV plant halve roughly every two years - meaning that every two years companies can build plants double the size for the same price.

A fight over fracking is looming in Texas. Another stand-off is shaping up in Colorado. Yet drillers' reactions couldn't be more different.

In Texas, drillers are doing their noisy in-your-face fracking as usual. Meanwhile, on a small farm about an hour from the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the oil industry is giving fracking a makeover, cutting back on rumbling trucks and tamping down on pollution.
