Water Explorer LogoGreenrock has partnered with HSBC and Global Action Plan to offer Water Explorer – a fun, student-led, action-packed programme for 8-14 year-olds – in Bermuda. Water Explorer is an international educational programme and competition involving at least 9,000 students across 11 countries. In becoming Water Explorers, students take on an important mission to safeguard our fresh water and lead the way to a more water conscious world.

Bermuda schools can now register to take part in Water Explorer.

Water Explorer can be completed as a stand-alone programme, or integrated as part of your existing curriculum, Eco-Club or Eco-Schools programme. Benefits of the programme include prizes for participating schools and the opportunity for local students and teachers to engage with other countries.

This programme integrates well with almost all of the Eco-Schools 'pathways', and can also be the focus of the Water pathway, and so participating in Water Explorers can help schools attain the coveted Green Flag award. It is also available as a stand-alone programme that schools, clubs or classes can take on independently.

Life Skills and Curriculum Activities:

The programme seeks to educate students in understanding where water comes from, where it's hidden, how it affects lives and how to take practical action to protect the environment at home, at school and within local communities. By completing challenges within each of the four mission areas, students will develop life skills such as presenting, critical thinking, project management and teamwork. These challenges also seek to instill values such as integrity, empathy, awareness and ultimately aim to leave participants with a better understanding of global water scarcities. Team in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, Switzerland and Bermuda will be competing and collaborating using the Water Explorer website and teacher forum.

What to expect once you have registered?

After teachers sign up, they will receive an email with instructions, guiding them through the process. Upon signing in on the website, educators are prompted to take a short quiz, after completing this, all program material and resources are available for use. As challenges are completed, students or teachers are able update their progress on the website which grows the online "reservoir" representing their overall points. They also have the opportunity to write blog posts and upload pictures, gaining them more points and the opportunity to win more prizes. After completing several challenges, schools are eligible to win a water workshop delivered by Greenrock and various partners. This workshop is in part to encourage the school to hold a "Water Festival". This can be any event that celebrates water awareness and education. Thanks to the flexible nature of the programme, it can fit with many things already happening within the school. Creativity is rewarded and we will be awarding bonus points to schools making incredible progress.
