Welcome to Greenrock

Greenrock is working to empower individuals and companies to do their part in making Bermuda socially, economically and environmentally more sustainable.

Greenrock develops and runs projects and initiatives for school communities under the stewardship of the Greenrock Education Council (GREC).

GREC's mission is "To engage school communities to identify and implement projects and initiatives that bring about positive environmental change".

GREC is currently responsible for the following Greenrock initiatives;

The Need

A sustainable Bermuda is one that meets the needs of our people and our economy, while ensuring the natural environment remains healthy and vibrant. This is particularly important in our education system. We can see all around that world that environmental degradation contributes to social unrest, not just where there is major degradation·— for example in the Amazon basin — but also in inner-cities where derelict building and uncared for spaces actually result in higher levels of crime.

Our Approach

There is a great deal of research that shows that formal education is more effective when young people can actively experience the curriculum and are encouraged to process the experience alongside the classroom education.

GREC seeks to inform students about the environment and sustainable development, and then re-inforce that message with experiential learning through projects.

GREC appreciates that not all young people are called to this type of work and not all schools have the resources to develop these projects. Eco-Schools follows a modular format enabling small groups of students, either in a club or a class, to commit to a project suited to their timeframe, resources and specific areas of interest. Each tried-and-tested module develops problem solving and communication skills, and introduces students to social and environmental change principles and practices.

Our primary objective is to nurture the next generation of innovative, ecologically conscious Bermudians.
