This is the speech given by Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment, the Hon. Jeanne Atherden, on the launch of Earth Hour 2016:

"Good morning ladies and gentlemen."

"I am delighted to join you today to help our Island prepare for Earth Hour next month. Earth Hour is an important global reminder that this is the only planet we have and we must treat it with care and respect, and leave it in better shape for generations to come."

"Bermuda is proud to participate in this annual event."

"This year Earth Hour will be on the 19th of March 2016 from 8:30PM. So we have just 24 days to go!"

"But observing Earth Hour is not only about an isolated moment to turn off the lights. We have to remember that it's a symbolic reminder to show our commitment to taking actions that can bring a brighter future for our children and grandchildren, and the world they will live in tomorrow."

"As the Minister responsible for the Environment I want to encourage everyone - I mean EVERYONE - in our community to join Earth Hour next month to raise awareness about energy conservation and sustainability."

"The small action Earth Hour promotes can motivate many people to take further steps beyond the hour itself, and to look at other ways they can be more energy efficient and recognise that we all have a part to play in preserving our planet."

"So, on the 19th of March, let's all use our own power to make a positive difference for climate change."

"Thank you."
