CETO20schematic1In order to explore the potential of wave power technology for Bermuda, Triton Renewable Energy Ltd. is initially proposing to install a 2MW demonstration CETO™ wave platform off Bermuda's south shore. The basic components of Carnegie's CETO™ technology are shown above. CETO™ operates as a hydraulic pump. Submerged buoys harness the ocean energy to drive these pumps, forcing seawater ashore at high pressure. The pressurized water is then used to drive onshore turbines to create base load electricity. The pressurized seawater can also be desalinated via reverse osmosis to create zero emission freshwater.

If the 2MW demonstration platform proves successful, it is intended to expand this venture to accommodate a commercial wave-energy generating platform to produce at least 20 MW of Bermuda's national energy demand (peak load of 120 MW).

What are the benefits?

  • Renewable, clean, domestic energy production
  • Increased energy security through reduced reliance on international oil importation
  • Stabilisation/slowdown of runaway electricity costs
  • Economic profitability and reinvestment of current fossil fuel capital expenditures into domestic economy
  • Promotion of Bermuda's role as a world leader in ocean renewable energy
  • Creation of new jobs
  • Creation of new industry and expansion of existing industry.

Triton has undertaken a Pre Feasibility Study and in partnership with Carnegie Wave Energy, Ltd. and BAS-Serco recently deployed a Triaxys™ Wave Buoy to fully characterise Bermuda's wave regime. A draft Environmental Scoping Report and a preliminary stakeholder consultation document have been completed and are available upon request.

The team at Triton is excited about the opportunity to provide the people of Bermuda with clean, renewable, reliable power and freshwater. We look forward to working together with the community, the Government, BELCO Ltd. and all other stakeholders to ensure this project becomes something the Island can be proud of.
